08/07/1996, Jindabyne, NSW 2:00 am - Two witnesses

Witness account: While on holidays at Jindabyne in July 1996, my friend Tim and I were out walking in the early hours. It was just after 2:00 in the morning. We noticed a re glow in the distance approximately 300 meters away. Thinking it was a fire we went to the public phone and called (000) emergency and reported a fire.

We returned to the area where we had seen the glow, we crossed the road and walked up a hill, rising about five vertical meters. In the distance we saw approximately four lights, they were about 200 meters away in-between some trees. At first we thought that it was people holding torches, but it was to dark to see if anyone or anything was holding them.

The lights, which were golf ball size started swaying from side to side just like a leaf falling of a branch but dipping in the middle. The lights also appeared to be more of an orange colour then that of a torch. The lights while still swaying, started to move towards us at a rapid rate. They came directly towards us in a straight line, without changing course.

As the lights were approaching us, we both heard a noise also approach, it was coming from the same direction of the lights. The lights were moving very quickly and in a couple of seconds had covered 250 to 300 meters, stopping some 50 meters away from us. The noise was a buzzing sound which sounded like a cross between extremely loud bees and a helicopter. Neither of us had ever heard a sound like that before.

The noise moved towards us at a phenomenal rate, apparently much faster then the lights. As the noise got closer it got louder and louder. My friend Tim started to walk towards the noise as if in a trance. I grab him and pulled him back, and we both ran back across to the other side of the street. The noise continued towards us until it was deafening.

We had to cover our ears, the noise seemed not only external but it felt like something inside your head, reading your thought, it was also quite painful. This continued for about twenty seconds, then the noise faded as if whatever caused it moved away. We both had the impression that the buzzing noise was reading our minds, we had headaches for the rest of the night.

We walked back up the grassy incline, everything was normal except for a faint buzzing. As we walked away we noticed a patch of ground lit up about twenty meters away. The light was shinning from the sky onto the ground, it was oval shaped with a diameter of three meters. The light then started to zig-zag towards us at about one mile a second. We watched it till it was about six or seven meters from us, then we ran.

After this we started to walk home. About two hundred meters down the street we saw what looked like a car driving down a hill towards us. The lights seemed to be more of an orange colour like the lights earlier but there was no road only bush. The light come towards us then it went behind a house and shot up into the sky. We had enough and went home.
